Sweden Takes Over Presidency in 2024

The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) is chaired by the five Nordic countries on a rotating basis. This year, Sweden holds the presidency, taking over from Iceland. Previously, Sweden was entrusted this role in 2018.

The guiding principles of the Swedish Presidency are ‘a safer, greener and freer Nordic region’. In line with Vision 2030 shared by all the Nordic countries, Sweden will continue efforts to make the Nordic region a leader in the green transition, and a globally competitive and socially sustainable region. Continuing to make it easier for businesses and people to operate across borders is crucial for competitiveness and growth of the Nordic region.

Sweden will be responsible for organising around 100 meetings at various levels, both digitally and on site in Sweden or at Nordens Hus, Copenhagen. About 20 meetings will be held at ministerial level in addition to a number of high-level conferences and other events.

Besides the NCM presidency, in 2024, Sweden will also chair the informal Nordic and Nordic-Baltic foreign and security policy cooperation formats – N5 and NB8. These are informal formats that bring together the Nordic (N5) and Nordic-Baltic (NB8) countries to coordinate and act together in areas of common interest in the field of foreign and security policy.

Nordic cooperation is one of the oldest forms of regional cooperation in Europe and, as such, unique. It is built on common values, history, culture, and similar language. It contributes to peace, stability and prosperity in the Nordic region and the world.
